Copper Surfaces Kill Superbug MRSA

Anti-biotic resistant superbugs such as MRSA are an enormous public health problem as they spread so easily around hospitals. In fact, an estimated 7 million people worldwide catch healthcare-associated infections each year. But there is a way to combat this, and it’s not the solution you’d be inclined to jump to. Forget anti-biotics or cleaning products, copper plated surfaces actually have the natural ability to kill bacteria on contact.

Here at NiTEC, we make habit of keeping a close eye on the research and experimentation surrounding the use of copper surfaces in the medical industry.

Copper is often used to plate laboratory and medical equipment in hospitals, which is why we launched our new service copper plating medical clipboards for use in hospitals.

With the evidence for copper killing bacteria on contact mounting, we are confident that our service of copper plating medical clipboards is the logical solution to preventing the spread of infection and superbugs such a MRSA in hospitals.

Bill Keevil, of the University of Southhampton recently carried out an experiment which would test the theory that copper could be a very effective way of combating anti-biotic resistant superbugs. The live experiment took place on World Health Day and involved Keevil sterilising copper and stainless steel plates, and then coating them with 10 million MRSA cells. The plates were placed under a microscope and the results recorded.

The MRSA on the stainless steel surface thrived, but amazingly, the MRSA on the copper surface began to die off. Bill Keevil understandably believes that copper and copper alloys should be used on contact surfaces around hospitals such as door handles for example.

Copper Plated Medical Clipboards

In our ongoing effort to develop our metal plating services and keep up to date with advances in the industry, we have recently expanded our copper plating services. As specialists in the process of copper plating, NiTEC have launched a new service copper plating clipboards for use in hospitals.

Copper plating has a natural ability to kill bacteria on contact, and therefore is frequently used to plate laboratory and medical equipment. “Copper plating is already used to plate door handles, push plates, and other equipment used in hospitals,” says NiTEC’s Commercial Director Marcus Hill. “I believe that by copper plating clinician’s clip boards, we can further contribute to providing an effective defense against the spread of infections in hospitals.”

Hospital-acquired infections are not only very common, but also very costly to the NHS. And recent research by carried out by the University of Southampton has shown that metallic copper surfaces kill microbes in minutes by causing significant membrane damage to the bacteria.

Copper has been proven to prevent the horizontal gene transfer in bacteria, which is to blame for antibiotic resistance, in turn increasing the number of health care associated infections. Horizontal gene transfer commonly takes place in hospitals on surface that are frequently touched. Copper plating contributes to the prevention of infection spread and gene transfer.

Copper plated clip boards are a logical step forward in the quest to reduce the spread of bacteria and provide extra protection alongside the standard hygiene practices in the hospital environment,” said Marcus.

Eliminate Post-Plate Grinding with Electroless Nickel Plating

An electroless nickel coating can eliminate the need for post-plate grinding because of its ability to deposit a reliable, uniform coating.

The metal layer deposited by the electroless nickel plating process has an even thickness over all surfaces of the component, virtually regardless of their shape. As the components are not deformed by the plating process, the uniformity of the coating obtained by the nickel plating makes the process ideal for engineering components. Therefore, this uniform coating is the perfect solution for critical high-end engineering items such as those used in the defense, healthcare, automotive and aerospace industries.

The deposition of a uniform electroless nickel coating save time, effort, and money because no processing of the part is needed after plating. Therefore, tight manufacturing tolerances can be achieved with an electroless nickel coating as it is deposited evenly on the surface of the part.

The uniform coating of the nickel plating means that the surface is very hard wearing, resistant to corrosion and durable in a variety of environments.

 

The deposition process of electroless nickel is autocatalytic, meaning that once a primary layer of nickel has formed on the substrate, that layer and each subsequent layer becomes the catalyst that causes the above reaction to continue. Thus, very thick coatings can be applied, provided that the ingredients in the plating bath are replenished.

NiTEC’s Movember Challenge Raises £500 for Charity

The staff at Nitec are proud to announce that their Movember mustache challenge raised a fantastic £500 for charity!

In November 2012, the entire male workforce of Nitec grew mustaches in aid of prostate and testicular cancer.

Quality Director Paul Allen said, “We’re really pleased we took part in Movember, it’s a great cause.  It was nice to get all the male staff involved in the fundraising, £500 isn’t bad for growing a few mustaches!”

 

Starting November with a clean shaven face, the staff didn’t shave for the entire month. And as you can see from the picture, they had some impressive facial hair going on!

Use Electroless Nickel Plating to Replace Hard Chrome

There are many advantages to using electroless nickel plating as an alternative to hard chrome.

Hard chrome is a common choice where the hardness and wear resistance of a component are important. The hardness of hard chrome is in the region of 800 – 1100 VHN.

The hard chrome deposit, however, is applied electrolytically. Metal coatings applied electrolytically generally create an uneven coating which may need post plating machining. The difference in coating uniformity between electrolytic and and electroless nickel plating is illustrated in the image below, and the same theory can be applied to hard chrome applied eloctrolytically and electroless nickel plating. Another disadvantage to hard chrome is that it tends to soften with heating.

Electroless nickel deposits form a perfectly uniform coating, unlike hard chrome. Although electroless nickel does not give the same level of hardness, the process of heat treatment can be used to harden it. Some electroless nickel deposits can be harder than 1000 VHN, making the hardness of electroless nickel plating comparable to that of hard chrome.
