Copper Surfaces Kill Superbug MRSA

Anti-biotic resistant superbugs such as MRSA are an enormous public health problem as they spread so easily around hospitals. In fact, an estimated 7 million people worldwide catch healthcare-associated infections each year. But there is a way to combat this, and it’s not the solution you’d be inclined to jump to. Forget anti-biotics or cleaning products, copper plated surfaces actually have the natural ability to kill bacteria on contact.

Here at NiTEC, we make habit of keeping a close eye on the research and experimentation surrounding the use of copper surfaces in the medical industry.

Copper is often used to plate laboratory and medical equipment in hospitals, which is why we launched our new service copper plating medical clipboards for use in hospitals.

Bill Keevil, of the University of Southhampton recently carried out an experiment which would test the theory that copper could be a very effective way of combating anti-biotic resistant superbugs. The live experiment took place on World Health Day and involved Keevil sterilising copper and stainless steel plates, and then coating them with 10 million MRSA cells. The plates were placed under a microscope and the results recorded.

The MRSA on the stainless steel surface thrived, but amazingly, the MRSA on the copper surface began to die off. Bill Keevil understandably believes that copper and copper alloys should be used on contact surfaces around hospitals such as door handles for example.

7 Great Reasons to Choose Electroless Nickel Plating

Here at NiTEC, we know that no other metal coating has the fantastic combination of properties offered by electroless nickel. Here are 7 great reasons to choose electroless nickel plating!


1. Corrosion resistance and corrosion protection

One of the most common reasons for the use of electroless nickel coatings in functional applications is its excellent corrosion resistance. In the very corrosive conditions encountered in drilling and producing oil wells, for example, electroless nickel has the ability to withstand the combination of corrosive chemicals and abrasion.

2. Wear resistance

With the appropriate heat treatment, electroless nickel plating can be hardened up to 950vhn. This makes it ideal for areas exposed to friction and wear.

3. Hardness

A great feature of electroless nickel plating is its hardness. Hardness values for electroless nickel deposits are in the range of 450-750 VHN, depending on the phosphorous content of the deposit.

4. Lubricity

Electroless nickel plating has natural self lubricating properties, which eliminates the need for liquid lubricants on components.

5. Solderability and bondability

Electroless nickel-phosphorus alloys are easily soldered with a highly active acid flux.

6. Uniformity of deposit regardless of geometries

Electroless nickel plating has a completely uniform coating. It’s a perfect solution for critical high-end engineering items including defence, healthcare, automotive and aerospace. Electroless nickel can be deposited to produce a wide range of coating thicknesses, with uniformity and minimum variation from point to point.

This uniformity can be maintained in plating both large and small parts and on components that are fairly complex, with recessed areas. Electroplating of such parts, on the other hand, would produce thickness variation and possible voids in the plating when coating holes and inside diameters.

7. Nonmagnetic properties of high-phosphorus nickel alloy

Electroless nickel deposits containing greater than 8 percent phosphorus are considered to be essentially nonmagnetic as plated.

Nickel Plating for the Packaging Industry

As specialists in the electroless nickel plating process, NiTEC have recently had an influx of orders for electroless nickel plating grooved rolls used in the packaging industry.

We are able to plate objects of up to 20 tonnes in weight, and are the only company in Europe with the capacity to plate such large components.

The grooved rolls are typically used in packaging, can weigh up to 5 tonnes and measure 12 metres in length. As packaging material passes over the rolls at speeds of 1200 metres a minute, these huge components have particularly tight tolerances.

Commercial Director of NiTEC UK, Marcus Hill, said: “Grooved rolls are enormous pieces of equipment. We are the only electroless nickel plating company in Europe to be able to handle such a large component, so naturally we see a number coming through our doors.”

Electroless nickel is the only type of plating suitable for this purpose because it provides a uniform coating, is very corrosion resistant and resilient to wear.  Manufactured using mild steel, the grooved rolls are coated with 30-50 microns of electroless nickel. They typically spin at very high speeds and therefore need to be perfectly balanced.

“With other surface treatments, the part would need to be plated and balanced afterwards,” says Marcus Hill. “But with electroless nickel, we are able to balance the grooved rolls, and then plate them, which is far more convenient for everyone.”
